This Report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the text – Technology Innovation to Accelerate Energy Transitions – a report prepared by the International Energy Agency(IEA)for the 2019 G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting. The Translator completes the translation with the assistance of computer-aided translation(CAT)tools, such as Wordfast,Xbench and Google Translate. This Report adopts the methodology of qualitative analysis to solely summarize the translation practice. The translation project falls into the category of translation of English for Science and Technology(EST).Frequent utilization of complex sentence, even multiple complex sentences,is one of the distinctive features of EST,and their translation is both a key point and a difficulty.Considering this fact and the analysis of the translation project, the Translator selects the translation of attributive clauses for discussion. The body of this Report consists of six chapters:Chapter 1 is an overview that clarifies the task description, text features, translation requirements, report structure and methodology.Chapter 2 introduces preparations made for the translation task including character recognition, project creation, creation of glossary and translation memory, file analysis and pseudo-translation.Chapter 3 is about the translation process, namely the process of translation segment editing in terms of machine-translation post-editing(MTPE)on the platform of Wordfast, quality assurance and translation export.Chapter 4 is case analysis, focusing on the translation of attributive clauses based on the analysis of cases chosen from the translation project.Attributive clauses may be treated and translated in four different ways:translation into pre-modifier,translation into main clause, translation into adverbial clause and translation into subordinate clause. The translation into pre-modifier is sub-divided into translation into a“?(suo)+v.+?(de)”structure as pre-modifier and translation into a“v.+obj.+?(de)”structure as pre-modifier.The translation into adverbial clause falls into five types of adverbial clauses:purpose, cause, condition, result and concession. The translation into subordinate clause is divided into two types:subordinate clause with the complete or partial repetition of the antecedent, and subordinate clause with the summative repetition of the antecedent.Chapter 5 is a reflection and improvement part that makes a contrast between the Translator's version and the proofread, with problems mirrored from the translation. In this part, the Translator mainly discusses three issues:distinction between“??(erqie)”and“??(bingqie)”in Chinese, misinterpretation of logical relationships and the structure of“?(dui)+obj.+??(jinxing)+v.”,so as to remind other translators and translation learners of the similar problems they could avoid.Chapter 6 is the conclusion part of this Report. This Report is not only of great reference significance for EST translators, but also has certain guidance for EST translation teaching. However, given the fact that the conclusions reached in this Report are based on cases from the translation project, and methods to deal with attributive clause are qualitatively analyzed,it is possible that the conclusions are limited to a degree, and can be improved with extended corpus providing more cases for similar qualitative analysis.
