Abstract/Summary:
A meta-analysis was carried out on 26 studies to investigate how the NIMBY phenomenon impacts urban and regional planning in North American and European municipalities. The research investigated six domains that influence how towns and cities are planned: transportation, housing, facility siting, tourism, natural resources, and environmental aesthetics. The results showed primary and secondary human responses that involve environmental or ecological consideration, human health and/or safety, and urban change.; These responses were created through trigger events that promote a NIMBY response and reflect a diversity of human reactions: personal views, bias, perceptions, preference, or attitudes regarding environmental or human health impacts. From the diversity of human responses, a highly rational process evolves, providing unique levels of impact between the individual and the project. Such reference is related to the nature and proximity of the trigger event, affected populations, and the impact of risk, ultimately influencing the NIMBY response.
