Abstract/Summary:
An optimal supplier selection and qualification methodology is important because the costs of purchased products are substantial relative to the costs of finished goods. Several works were reviewed to identify common sourcing concerns and best practices. It was found that the process of qualification suffers from inconsistencies and a lack of role definitions and responsibilities. This results in longer cycle times and increased costs.; This study provides a methodology that integrates multiple sourcing and quality tools into the four staged process of sourcing request, supplier search and prescreening, pre-qualification, and quality planning---part approval to address the reported issues of an inconsistent process and unclear expectations. This work includes sufficient details fox readers to pilot and adapt the methodology to their organization's needs.; A recurring theme found in the literature is that formalized methods with clear expectations reduce total cost by improving yields, reducing inspections and shortening cycle times.
