Abstract/Summary:
This final project outlines the Sunset Park Community Arts Center. The goal of the center is to offer instruction in the arts at no cost to the children of Sunset Park; an urban, low income neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. A review of related literature will support the design for an arts center by presenting research on the benefits of children partaking in the arts, both during and after school hours.;A program design is included, supported by Gardner's theories of multiple intelligences, Gullatt's findings that the arts support all other learning, and the Dana Foundation's work concerning the benefits of learning in the arts as viewed from a scientific standpoint. The program design explains how the center will function, including the types of arts that will be taught and how they will be taught. A funding plan will also be described due to the nonprofit nature of the center, making its functioning reliant on fundraising, philanthropy, partnerships and government grants.;A comparative analysis will look at comparable neighborhood centers, describing the similarities and differences between the programs and services offered. A plan for program assessment is also described in order to ensure that the center will satisfactorily serve the community and meet its artistic goals. The appendix includes an outline of proposed class offerings as well as oft used sheets and assessments to be administered by the staff.
