Abstract/Summary:
This action research study explored how Coastal Pacific Xpress (CPX) could develop competencies based on organizational values. Elements included identifying corporate values, improving employee alignment and engagement to the organization's values, and developing competencies based on the aforementioned organizational values. Terminologies contiguous to organizational purpose, values, and competencies were defined and examined. Based on models developed since 1993, the importance of introducing competency-based models was discussed, including their inherent benefits and challenges. Conducted using a sequential mixed method that included surveys and interviews, this study found organizational values and corresponding competencies could be used as guidelines for behaviour and decision making. Recommendations included continued development of organizational values and competencies, expanded training in becoming a values-driven organization, and integration of competency-based systems with current business practices.
