Abstract/Summary:
This participatory action research project examined ethical and clinical decisionmaking for health care providers in the community care area of the Interior Health Authority (IHA). The research question asks: "What are the training and educational needs of health care providers (IHA) in community care for ethical and clinical decisionmaking for high-risk clients?" This report discusses the opportunity and gives a systems analysis of the research project's organizational context. An extensive review of the applicable literature is provided and the action research methodology is described. The findings clearly indicate the need for further education and processes to support complex decisionmaking for health care professionals working with at-risk clients. A combination of collaborative teamwork, knowledge, and practice will provide the tools to facilitate ethical practice. Availability of these resources and successful change implementation will require support and encouragement from middle and senior management.
