Abstract/Summary:
This study explores the connection between community murals and community development. Using qualitative data collected from the 24 th Street/Mission District and a local community mural arts organization, the study discusses potential impacts of participation in the mural process and the resulting murals. The author explores the social, personal, and physical impacts of the community murals of 24th Street/Mission. Drawing from theories of cultural community participation and mural arts, the author identifies connections between participation in community murals and personal and community development, empowerment, and pride. This research highlights the benefits and the challenges that arise from a collaborative and creative process for both the individual and the neighborhood as a whole. The study illuminates the significant influence history and culture has on existing murals and the community's perceptions on their neighborhood. This research reveals the important role a community mural arts organization plays in promoting and carrying on the community mural tradition. The author uncovers the collaborative characteristics that positively impact both participating individuals and the community as a whole. While the impacts of community murals prove to be primarily positive, the study highlights the challenges and limitations of community mural projects, including the threat of gentrification, lack of funding, and the challenges of organizational leadership.
