This paper offers a view of Islam as a political force in Muslim nations that ultimately failed. This failure is a result of political oppression by incumbent governments of the region against any opposition. It is because of this that political groups went underground and began to use terrorism against their governments. The governments responded by brutally repressing these groups. In turn these terrorist groups began to target the United States because of the support the U.S. was giving to the autocratic governments in the region. This paper examines how political Islam failed and how the United States needs to modify its policy towards terrorism to promote democracy in order to combat the political causes of terrorism. |
