Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this document is to examine briefly the life of Carlos Guastavino and to study the text and music of these selected song cycles. The majority of this document is based on the analysis of these cycles, with additional insight on Guastavino based on interviews conducted by the author in August 1994.;The Introduction, Chapter One, provides a brief overview of Guastavino's place within the world of composition. It also defines the Need for the Study, Purpose of the Study, Limitations of the Study and Procedure and Methodology of the Study.;Chapter Two is a biographical sketch of Carlos Guastavino; topics include his early years and musical influences, his professional training and musical influences and ideas. Chapter Three is an analytical study of the text and music of Las Nubes, with a biographical sketch of the poet, Luis Cernuda. Chapter Four is an analytical study of the text and music of Cuatro Sonetos de Quevedo, with a biographical sketch of the poet, Francisco Quevedo.
