Abstract/Summary:
This work presents the use of integer programming (IP) to solve an important and difficult problem in the project management area: the integration of project management with a scheduling tool, in order to bring a complete methodology to control and adjust the project performance. The problem is defined as obtaining the schedule of the project activities and the assigned resources to the project while controlling the project length, minimizing the project costs, and fulfilling the planned goals. A new scheme of IP scheduling is proposed in order to bring a time efficient model for scheduling big size projects with a finite number of identical activities. Also, the model works assigning human resources over two hierarchical levels: operational and supervision. Operational activities have fixed and known duration, while duration of supervision activities depends on the cumulative length of the supervised activities. The results show that the proposed model works faster than the traditional approach. A case study in the telecommunications industry is presented in order to illustrate the proposed technique.
