Abstract/Summary:
ISO 14001 is an international environmental management system (EMS) standard that has been widely embraced by the woodlands operations of forest products companies as a form of forest certification. The thesis seeks to provide the Newfoundland Forest Service (NFS)---the government body charged with forest management---with a clear picture of its current situation with respect to the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. The thesis also seeks to determine potential unique issues that may affect the NFS should it decide to implement an ISO EMS, as well as to provide options for the resolution of such issues and potential barriers.; A literature review was conducted to develop a clear understanding of the practice of forest management in Newfoundland, the ISO 14001 standard, and previous links between the ISO 14001 standard and government entities. Potential barriers to ISO implementation were identified.; Interviews were conducted with 30 people including employees of the NFS and industry representatives. Interview data were used to conduct an environmental review and gap analysis, and to develop a clear picture of the potential barriers facing the NFS should it choose to implement ISO 14001.
