Abstract/Summary:
In this exploratory study, the relationship between patent portfolio significance and technology transfer performance among US research universities is examined. This relationship is compared with the effect of other university characteristics on such performance, including university size, experience in technology transfer, relative staffing levels, research funding sources and the existence of a medical school.; 1996--1999 performance and university characteristics data was obtained for approximately 65 US research universities from the Association of University Managers. Patent citation frequency indices provided by CHI Research are used as a measure of portfolio significance.; Analysis reveals no consistent relationship between patent portfolio significance and technology transfer performance. As well, only modest relationships are found between technology transfer performance and university characteristics, suggesting that technology transfer performance is not predetermined by patent portfolio or university characteristics.
