Abstract/Summary:
I have created a new genre called Graphic Poetry which demonstrates how poetic verse can be visually represented. The poetic verse at issue comes from Kurt Pinthus' 1920 collection of poetry, Menschheitsdammerung, a compilation of Expressionist verse of the early 20th century. The world of academia has crowned this collection as the seminal work of Expressionist literature, and it makes the claim to be the choric expression of an entire generation's innermost desires, trepidations, and privations. This claim is, however, suspect as the collected verse does not adequately line up with the artistic tenants of the visual end of Expressionism. My thesis solves this problem through the graphic transference of a selection of poems from Menschheitsdammerung into the medium of Graphic Poetry. Thus, the gap between the visual and the literary is bridged and rebuilt with the grammar of the graphic medium. Graphic Poetry proves itself to be highly effective as it simultaneously merges visual and textual Expressionism, all the while creating a new context for poetry over a century old.
