Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relationship and/or relevance of schema theory to the translation process. Schema theory describes how people organize knowledge in their minds. Research has related schema theory to culture, which is where the translation process starts, but no research has previously examined schema theory and the whole translation process. Translation involves translating the meaning of the source text (i.e., the original author's intended communication), into the receptor language, conveying that same meaning. A questionnaire, completed by thirty-seven translators, was used to gather the research data.;Results indicate that there is definitely a relationship between schema theory and the translation process, as seen in (1) the people's understanding and attitude of the translator, (2) the translators' choices of what to translate, (3) the changes they would make, (4) the peoples' reactions to and understanding of the text, and (5) the description of translation problems.
