Abstract/Summary:
The profession of the art expert, formerly known as expertising, has evolved throughout the years. Beginning in the 17th century, groups of artists came together to properly attribute works of art. This practice evolved over time into the modern day understanding of the expert-scholar focused on fighting the dominance of forgeries in the marketplace. The profession has seen highs and lows, with scandals and lawsuits following many published decisions. This thesis focuses on the evolution of the profession by highlighting the careers of various renowned experts, and looking into the complex laws governing an authenticator's rights and responsibilities. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the key terms involved, and an analysis of the past, present, and future of the industry, this thesis identifies the current problems plaguing the profession, to ultimately offer solutions for saving an age-old necessity.
