Liquidambar formosana Hance is a kind of plant which is belong to Hamamelidaceae,Liquidambar Linn.As a common tree in China,Liquidambar formosana Hance has a strong sprouting power,it is distributed in the southern provinces of Qinling Mountains and Huaihe River.At the same time,it is also distributed in Northern Southeast Asia and Southern Korea.In the theory and practice of traditional Chinese medicine in China,the roots,fruits,leaves,bark and resin of the Liquidambar formosana Hance have important medical value.Its leaves can neutralize poison and stop bleeding;its fructus can dispel wind and dehumidification,stimulate the menstrual flow and diuresis[13];Its resin can activate blood and generate muscle,relieve pain and detoxification,and can be used for falling injury,vomiting blood and traumatic bleeding;its bark has the functions of dehumidification and diarrhea,dispelling wind and itching.In recent years,many researchers have studied the fructus and resin of Liquidambar formosana and found that the important active components are terpenoids,but there are few reports on the chemical constituents of its leaves.So,this paper has reviewed the terpenoids and their bioactivities which were isolated from Liquidambar formosana,and studied the chemical constituents of ethyl acetate fraction from the ethanol extract of Liquidambar formosana leaves based those research.Forty compounds were isolated and identified from the leaves of Liquidambar formosana.Among them,there was one compound was identified as new,besides,there were 19compounds were obtained from Liquidambar formosana for the first time.The leaves of Liquidambar formosana were extracted by 95%ethanol,and then partitioned by organic solvents.The compounds were isolated by silica gel column chromatography,Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography,identified by mass spectrometry(MS)and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and other modern analytical techniques.40 compounds were identified from its ethyl acetate fraction.Among them,there are eight lignans,1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-(2-hydroxy-4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-6-dimethoxyphenoxy)propane-1,3-diol(1),pinoresinol(2),1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-[4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy]-1,3-propanediol(3),Isolariciresinol(4),dihydrodehydrodiconiferyl alcohol(5),syringaresinol(6),Lariciresinol(7),(+)-lyoniresinol(8).There are 11 terpenoids,including 9 pentacyclic triterpenoids and 2 sesquiterpenoids.They are lupeol(9),3?-acetoxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(10),betulin(11),oleanolic acid(12),europatoric acid(13),1?,3?-dihydroxyl-olean-12-en-28-oic acid(14),blumenol A(15),6,9-dihydroxy-7-megastigmen-3-one(16),3?,25-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid(17),a mixture which is mixed with oleanolic acid(18)and ursolic acid(19)of pentacyclic triterpenoids.Two sterols,?-sitosterol(20)and sitosteryl 3?-glucoside 6'-O-palmitate(21).Seven flavonoids were identified as kaempferol(22),naringenin(23),quercetin(24),and(2R,3R)-taxifolin(25),tiliroside(26),juglalin(27),and 2"-p-coumarillastragalin(28).Sevensimplearomaticcompounds,4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoldehyde(29),4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid(30),ethyl gallate(31),pyrogallol(32),gallic acid(33),3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid(34),cis-p-hydroxycinnamic acid(35).Three aliphatic compounds,palmitic acid(36),methyl palmitate(37),1-heneicosanol(38).Two other compounds,12 hydroxyjasmonic acid(39),3,3'-bis(3,4-dihydro-4-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2H-1-benzopyran)(40).Among them,compound 1 was a new compound,and compound 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,13,15,16,21,26,27,28,39 and 40 wre isolated from Liquidambar Linn.genus for the first time.
