With the process of reform and opening-up in 1978,China’s economy has continued to grow at a high speed. As one of the three carriages of China’s economic growth, foreign trade is also concerned by all countries in the world.Since China access to the WTO,the ranking of import and export trade has rapidly jumped to the first place in the world. In this process,China’s environmental pollution problem has become more and more prominent, especially PM2.5pollution in recent years. So,what is the relationship between import and export trade and PM2.5?What is the impact of different products and industries on PM2.5 pollution? This thesis will focus on those problems.Firstly, this thesis reviews the literature of STIRPAT model and proposes a new STIRPAT extension model.Secondly, this thesis analyzes the current situation of China’s import and export trade and PM2.5 pollution. Finally, this model is used to analyze the data of 31 provinces in China from 2001 to 2016,and spatial panel data is used to analyze the impact of import and export and other factors on PM2.5 pollution. Our findings suggest that in the case of overall trading, both imports and exports intensify PM2.5 pollution of China’s provinces in terms overall trading, however,in the case of trading by different sectors, whereas both imports and exports of manufacture goods, heavy industry goods intensify PM2.5 pollution of China’s provinces, both imports and exports of high-tech goods retard PM2.5 pollution of China’s provinces. At the meantime, while factors such as economic growth, energy structure, transportation, population scale and rate of urbanization are positively relative to PM2.5 pollution, other factors such as human capital, strength of pollution regulation are negatively relative to PM2.5 pollution. Our contributions are that we explore different effects of import and export respectively on PM2.5pollution by introducing degree of import dependence, degree of export dependence and degree of domestic sale dependence into STIRPAT model.
