The use of public spaces and transportations are increasing with the rapid sprawl and development of urban city.In recent years, people have started to focus on the relationships among users, user activities, spaces and energy usage. The way to use space efficiently and humanely has become a global issue which is concerned by designers and engineers nowadays. The interior space of the underground station is one of the most used public areas. However, the current research within this area mostly focuses on energy consumption and space design based on the spatial distribution itself, and it is uncommon to do spatial analysis from the perspective of space participants. This research mainly focuses on using resistance value concepts from Minimum Cumulative Resistance(MCR)model to analyse the participation preferences of users in different functional areas. On this basis of this,a spatial preference analysis is carried out.The sample space in this research is comprised of multiple subway stations in Beijing, and the target space in the case analysis section is based on the Xinjiekou station.A new evaluation system of space preference attribution is built for the research of the interior space in the underground stations through analysis and field investigation. The difference between potential attributes and resistance attributes is calculated to determine whether the space satisfies the needs of users or not.The results could help architects and engineers detect potentially crowded or underutilised building space, and then eliminate unnecessary space or modify the design to control space-use in the interior space of underground stations and balance the usage intensity of each functional area.It could also assist the designers to make a better choice for the set-up of necessary infrastructures, humane lighting design and suitable categories of artworks for each functional area(e.g.interactive art requires people to participate in it,which need to be arranged by concerning people’s preferences)and so on.This research provides new ideas and methods for the related investigations of future generations.
