The republic of Sudan is currently developing the Dongola wind farm with a final capacity of 100 MW.The wind farm shall be implemented into two construction phases:phase I shall comprise of 20 MW and phase II of 80 MW respectively. It is planned to integrate the final wind farm capacity into the existing 220 KV-grid system, which is currently under construction and shall connect the towns of Dongola and Wawa.wind measurement campaign in North Sudan has been started in order to identify areas with high wind energy potential. It is generally anticipated that large wind turbines result in better electrical power generation in more efficient and economical manner. However, the question remains is that how large a wind turbine is the optimum size for a selected wind farm?To answer this, three important objective functions, the Levelized cost of electricity(LCOE),the capacity factor(CF)and annual energy production(AEP)are optimized versus the rated wind speed.Optimal turbine selection has been identified considering annual energy production and financial considerations. It is also concluded that, there are limits for the optimum rated wind power and the costs.
