It is generally recognized that urban squares originated from the western tradition of urban construction.In the past century,especially since the reform and opening up,China has built a lot of urban squares.But at present,some of them are facing the dilemma of lack of public activities and vitality.In recent years,with the development of ‘New-Type Urbanization’,the improvement of quality of urban connotation and humanoriented planning have become the focus of attention.Those squares that were once in the center of cities and on the verge of decline have been given the opportunity to transform,renew and regenerate their vitality.Taking the project of Changzhou Cultural Palace plaza as an example,this paper discusses the planning and design strategy of the urban square from the perspective of vitality regeneration by means of first-hand field research,literature research,questionnaire interview and case analysis.This paper is divided into seven chapters,and the research is carried out according to the ideas of raising problems--analyzing problems--solving problems--reflection and prospects.The main contents of each chapter are as follows:The first chapter describes the origin and purpose of this research,and systematically reviews the research on ‘vitality regeneration’ and ‘city square’.The second chapter interprets the concept represented by ‘vitality’,introduces the concept of ‘dominant’ and ‘recessive’,constructs the factor system that affects the regeneration of square vitality,and concludes the complementary and interactive dialectical relationship between dominant and recessive elements.The third chapter analyzes the recessive elements of the regeneration of the square from three aspects: historical continuity,spatial aesthetic orientation and demands of various subjects,and summarizes the principles of selection and integration of the recessive elements.Based on this,the planning and design points that can be summarized.The fourth chapter,from the perspective of cross-scale,analyzes the dominant factors from three aspects of spatial structure,spatial composition,node design,constructs the planning and design principles of dominant factors,and summarizes the dominant factor design strategies.The fifth chapter expounds how the dominant and recessive factors affecting the regeneration of the cultural palace square are implemented in the design process,and comments on the design results,reflects on the differences between the actual state and the ideal scheme and analyzes the reasons.The sixth chapter summarizes the four main reasons that lead to the lack of vitality of the current urban squares,analyzes the new features and new design perspectives of current urban vitality,and points out that the public participation and multi-dimensional factor integration should be paid attention to in the future design framework.In general,this paper systematically studied the methods and strategies of urban square design from the perspective of vitality regeneration,discussed the common reasons for the lack of vitality in some urban squares in China,and prospected the future vitality regeneration design,hoping that the research results can provide reference for similar types of urban square design.
