In the context of the sustainable development of urban space in pursuit of humanization and refinement, this paper explores the impact of built environment elements on the feeling of safety in residential communities of Mian Yang.Based on related research, the specific concept of feeling of residential safety is determined, and is constructed of five categories including communication, activity, traffic, public security and privacy.Built environment includes aspect of roads, buildings, plants, facilities, environmental quality, negative space, defense system.Questionnaire survey was used for data collection, and stratified multiple stepwise regression was applied to explore the influencing factors of the feeling of residential safety. The explanatory degree of the regression equation was gradually increased with the addition of variables, which proved that the personal family attribute, social environment and built environment variables all had significant influences on the feeling of residential safety, and the built environment variables had the greatest influence degree. Then, through the structural equation model, this paper deeply analyzes the influence mode and degree of built environment variables on feeling of residential and layered multi-dimensional safety, and finds that except the facilities variable, roads, buildings, plants, environmental quality, negative space and defense system all have significant influences on them.Secondly, based on the above research, structural equation model is established to explore the mediating effects of sense of belonging as well as residents’ activities variables on feeling of residential safety. Results prove that the feeling of residential safety can be changed by influencing the sense of belonging and residents activities, also further find that environmental facilities can improve the feeling of residential safety by positively influence belonging through indirect path. Finally, this paper uses the IPA quadrant to determine the priority of factors affecting the feeling of safety,it is found that the quality of faci lities,unit-door access control, street lighting and electronic monitoring are environmental factors with high residents’ expectations but poor actual performance, and the relevant factors should be paid enough attention for improvement.Based on the abov e analysis, optimization strategy are given to improve the residential environment, including strengthen defense image of the residential area, create high quality traffic space and improve the effectiveness of "natural monitoring".
