With the further advancement of the manufacturing power strategy,the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry poses new challenges to the reform of higher engineering education.In order to adapt the cultivation of engineering undergraduate talents to international trends,and to connect the reform of engineering talents cultivation mode in universities with the development of manufacturing industry,it is necessary to deeply study the cultivation mode of engineering talents.This paper takes the Chinese and American engineering education reform as the perspective,and selects universities that are of great significance to the higher engineering education reform,and analyzes the mechanical engineering specialty that has strategic significance for the development of advanced manufacturing.Conducted comparative studies on cultivation objectives,curriculum settings,and cultivation methods.This paper deeply analyzes the talent cultivation goals of 42 Chinese and American universities,establishes a large-scale corpus,and finds the similarities and differences in the reform directions of the two countries from the setting of cultivation goals,and finds that the main reform direction of the two countries’ engineering education is centered on engineering and relies on basic science,focusing on engineering issues,and cultivating undergraduate engineering talents.In the process of cultivating engineering talents in our country,we should weaken the boundaries between this discipline and this field.In the setting of cultivation goals,we should focus on students,return to the essence of education,pay equal attention to research and application,cultivate engineers and scientists,and guide students to establish long-term goals and establish correct career outlook,strengthen career construction.Through case studies,it is found that mathematics and natural basic science courses occupies a fundamental position in the cultivation of undergraduate engineering talents in the two countries,and the humanities and social sciences play a role in the cultivation of undergraduate engineering talents.In terms of the specific arrangement of courses,American universities put more emphasis on the construction of writing and expression courses,while China puts more emphasis on the reform direction of the construction of cross-cultivation courses in the engineering field.In the process of engineering education reform,both countries have seen the important role of practical activities in engineering education.In addition,engineering talents are an important driving force for the development of advanced manufacturing.Universities have a supporting and leading role and are an important variable in the reform process.Therefore,in order to promote the direction of higher engineering education reform,Chinese and American universities,especially top universities,need to actively respond to the challenges of the development of advanced manufacturing to engineering education reform,play a leading role,take the initiative to undertake the task of cultivating innovative engineering talents,and cultivate multidisciplinary high-quality engineering talents.
