This report is written from the simulated simultaneous interpreting(SI)practice based on British Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2018,with an view to analyzing feasible strategies that can be adopted in English-Chinese(E-C)SI.The speech aims at addressing global issues in the economic sphere,promoting international cooperation and rising to common challenges under the background of intensified geo-strategic competition.The content of the speech is substantial and informative,containing multiple global affairs,while the language is formal and well-organized with an indisputable logic.The target audience is national leaders,government ministers and enterprise leaders,thus restraining the interpreter’s language production both at semantic and pragmatic level to meet the needs of the audience.The author considers this practice challenging and demanding.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the author applies four strategies for improving the quality of interpretation,including syntactic linearity,segmentation,adjustment and anticipation In the practice,the author also identifies interpreting difficulties such as translating ambiguous pronouns,information reorganization and choosing appropriate vocabulary within the framework of Skopos theory.At last,this thesis concludes with reflections that interpreters should make sufficient preparations before the task,expand the scope of linguistic knowledge,learn and master interpreting skills and strategies,cultivate bilingual thinking and improve expression competence.The author believes that this research has significant implication for major international conference interpreting activities that are of both political and economic importance.
