An E-C Translation Report On Fed Monetary Policy News Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

As a translation practice report,the English source texts are chosen from Reuters news coverage on the FED monetary policy decisions over recent years.Given its pragmatic feature and specific readership,the TT should be professional and readable to meet the expectations of TT receivers’.The translator chooses the Skopos theory to guide the E-C translation practice.Through a large number of translation cases,this paper analyzes how to utilize appropriate translation strategies to realize the translation purpose.The Skopos theory originated from the German functionalism,first raised by Hans J.Vermeer.Skopos theory is regarded as the greatest theoretical breakthrough in functionalist school.It emphasizes that the purpose guides the translation process and behaviors,including the choice of translation strategies.There are three rules under the Skopos theory,which is Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.The Skopos rule is the top-ranking rule.Under the Skopos’ theoretical framework,the most important factor is TT receivers who are varied in educational and cultural background.The TT receivers of FED monetary policy are financial practitioners with rich financial literacy,and the translator hopes to provide them with a professional and investment-oriented TT.This report analyzes the lexical and syntactical features of FED monetary policy news.It demonstrates the superiority of Skopos theory in guiding the translation work from the lexical and syntactical level.The Skopos theory gives translators wider freedom to choose different translation techniques.In lexical level,the translator adopts literal and free translation strategy to improve the professionalism and accuracy in TT,and solve the ambiguity problems in ST.In syntactical level,the translator employs sequential,reversing and splitting to translate long sentences.Through many representative cases,the translator verifies the feasibility of Skopos theory in guiding the FED monetary policy news translation.The translator hopes to explore the translation strategies of financial news,which are represented by the FED monetary policy news,and provide reference for the translation of parallel texts.
