Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China is a textbook written by O.L.Kilborn,a medical missionary of the Anglo-American Society,which records the dialect of Chengdu in the late nineteenth century.The textbook was published in 1917 by the West China Concord University for missionaries who came to China to study Chinese.Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China is of great significance to the study of modern Chengdu dialects and Southwest Mandarin,and it has a high reference value for exploring social development and cultural communication at that time.The essay first briefly describes O.L.Kilborn’s life,shows the background of the textbook compilation and summarize the overall situation of Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China;then analyzes the phonetics,vocabulary,and grammar based on the textbook;compares and analyzes the similarities and differences with the current Chengdu dialect;finally,makes an overall evaluation of the textbook to explain the advantages and disadvantages.
