A Report On The Translation Of Metadiscourse: Exploring Interaction In Writing (Excerpt)

This translation report mainly focus on the specific translation process of a linguistic book called Metadiscourse: Exploring interaction in writing written by Ken Hyland in 2005.This book puts forward a new framework on metadiscourse and elaborates the application of metadiscourse in different fields.In accordance with Reiss’ s(2004)text typology,the academic book is a typically informative text.Under the guidance of Skopos theory given by Hans Vermeer in 1984,the translator employs the skopos,coherence and fidelity rules of Skopos theory in translation.The translation report analyzes the features of the original text from the lexical and syntactic level and illustrates the difficulties in translations of terms and long and complex sentences and put forward the detailed solutions.In lexical level,as an academic book which put forward a new concept,this translation project contains a lot of linguistic terms.The translator adopts some translation skills such as addition and omission to have a better translation on them.In syntactic level,the translator also applies literal,converse,and divided translation skills to solve the problems of long and complex sentences.Lastly,the translation project has been revised by the translator for several times to improve its quality.This translation project will make some contributions to the study of metadiscourse and provide some experiences and references on the translation of linguistic terms and long and complex sentences.
