For that the globalization witnesses the increasingly important role of television discourse,it is crucial for Chinese media to know the values of discourse in foreign television programs. This paper selects two chapters from the book Values and Choices in Television Discourse:A View from Both Sides of the Screen focusing on the topic of reality shows, analyzes systematically the linguistic features of academic papers in media field, and discusses thoroughly the translation principles under the guidance of text typology theory introduced by Peter Newmark in order to be of reference value to those who study text typology theory or the discourse of foreign television programs and to give examples to the future researches into the translation of academic papers in the field of media as well as other fields.According to text typology theory, texts fall into three types on the basis of different functions:expressive text, informative text and vocative text. Two translation tactics are introduced then:semantic translation and communicative translation,of which the former is better applied to expressive text, while the latter,to informative text and vocative text. The translation material involves several academic papers in media field in a formal tone, which is in accordance with the features of an informative text. Therefore,in the course of translation, communicative translation should be adopted as the major translation tactic. In this paper, linguistic features of the translation material are analyzed including:from the perspective of lexicon, the use of terms(names of TV programs, common words used as professional expressions and acronyms)and culture-loaded words(words containing English allusions and literary expressions);from the perspective of syntax, passive voice and long sentences with complex structures(with clauses or parentheses);and from the perspective of discourse, precise language and cohesion(overt and covert cohesion).Based on text typology theory and other researches on this theory, this paper comes up with three principles with examples thoroughly analyzed in the reasoning process:the translation should effectively convey the information of source text, with eyes fixed on the accuracy of polysemy in terms and the completeness of culture-loaded words with such translation methods adopted as footnote and adaptation;the translation should be idiomatic in target language, with focuses on the conversion of part of speech, voice and sentence structure;the translation should be precise and cohesive in a natural style, with emphasis on the conformity with the context as well as the lexical cohesion(repetition)and grammatical cohesion(hypotaxis and parataxis).
