Loss And Reconstruction Of Intellectual’s Freedom And Wisdom

“Age Trilogy”(“The Golden Age” “The Bronze Age” “The Silver Age”)is a collection of Wang Xiaobo’s novels in his mature period.In these novels,Wang Xiaobo recalls the history,experiences the present,wonders the future,and builds a unique spiritual homeland by superb fictional art.The situation of intellectuals is an important writing object of “Age Trilogy”.Based on the various events experienced by the protagonist and the identity alienation faced by the protagonist in the novel,the author leads to the intellectual’s spiritual dilemma and his thoughts on this issue.This thesis will start from the protagonists’ situation in that special time,and regenerate the freedom and wisdom of intellectuals from the process of loss and reconstruction,then accomplish a reflection on the issue of intellectuals.The core of the first chapter is the publicly expose,resistance and escape events in the novel which appear in the stable structure many times.The publicly expose means that the judge who has power and the ignorant onlookers attack the detainees together,the resistance reveals the subject consciousness and belief in freedom,the escape means the search for freedom.However,discipline always exists,so the escape is meaningless.The subject of the event finally falls into the dilemma of aphasia in this power structure cycle.The second chapter explains the specific circumstances of intellectuals under the control of the discourse of power.In that particular era,the intellectuals are faced with the violent punishment and mild discipline of the discourse of power,their living place,the pleasure of thinking and subjectivity are disappearing.This crisis is also caused by the intellectuals’ excessive insistence on “specialization” and “technicalization”.The third chapter starts with the way that the intellectuals lead to freedom and wisdom again.In “Age Trilogy”,the extensive use of parody and irony not only powerfully deconstructs the order of discourse,but also clearly expresses the writer’s personal attitude of pursuing freedom and wisdom.Art has a free core,Wang Xiaobo pays special attention to art and tries to solve the crisis of intellectuals inside and outside the text with the help of art.In general,freedom and wisdom are the root of intellectuals.In the process of clarifying the structure and connotation of the novels,this thesis analyses the reasons for the loss of intellectual subjectivity,and analyzes the action of intellectuals to dissolve the power order and the path to rebuild their free space.In a word,this thesis attempts to complete a deep analysis of processes and ways of intellectuals to regain their freedom and wisdom.
