The eighteen laws for painting the lines is a basic technique of traditional Chinese figure painting,which is well known to beginners.However,how was the concept of eighteen laws for painting the lines proposed,which versions quoted it after it was proposed,what misinterpretations exist among the versions,and what misinterpretations have been continued to this day? When did the painting manual of the eighteen laws for painting the lines come into being and what is the inheritance relationship between the versions? These questions are little known.This paper takes the eighteen laws for painting the lines as the research object.First of all,through the version comparison,this paper makes a brief description of the inheritance relation between the different versions of the painting theory and different versions of painting manual,and corrects the misreadings of different versions in the process of evolution.This paper puts the concept of the eighteen laws for painting the lines in the context of art history,which it emergence and development,and investigates why the concept of the eighteen laws for painting the lines was put forward in China,it did not produce painting manual,but spread to Japan,and then returned to China after being drawn by Japanese painters.
