Chinese idiom is a kind of idiom with set phrases,proverb and two-part allegorical saying.Mostly idioms are from people’s daily life and are active in spoken language,reflecting the culture and customs of Chinese people.On the other hands,Chinese idioms are difficult for international students,especially for Thai students who come from different culture and languages.Therefore,they often used idioms incorrectly.In order to encourage Thai students better understand the specific meaning of Chinese idioms and improve their ability of Chinese communication,the author conducted a survey research by using a variety of statistics in order to comprehend the usage of idioms by Thai students in Chongqing.This study investigated Thai students in Chongqing,regarding the intermediate level.First of all,the author based on the research summary of the predecessors,this study makes a comprehensive comparison of the Chinese idioms in terms of definition,structure,semantics and pragmatics.Then,the author administered a questionnaire for the intermediate level of the Thai students in Chongqing,explained and analyzed the results of the questionnaire.This research conducted a chapter to analyze the errors of Thai students in Chinese idioms,revealed the reasons for the errors,mainly in structure,semantics and pragmatics.The causes included negative transfer of mother tongue,lack of target language ability,influence of learning strategies,influence of teaching materials,influence of teaching environment,etc.Finally,the teaching strategy of Chinese idioms is put forward,which has the suggestions for teachers and students.
