| This report is based on the translation project of the first chapter of Kimi Addonizio and Dorianne Laux’s book,The Poet’s Companion: A Guide to the Pleasure of Writing Poetry.This chapter has seven sections and illustrates how to write poetry from different perspectives.The analysis of the original text is mainly divided into two parts.One part is the formal poetry translation,and the other part is the source text authors’ comments on how to write poetry.These two parts are different styles of writing and need to be distinguished.On the basis of modifying the language theory of Buhler and Jakobson’s functional model,Newmark divided the original texts into expressive function,informative function,vocative function,aesthetic function,phatic function and metalingual function.In this translation practice,the original text has both expressive function and informative function,which requires the translator to adopt different translation strategies.In accordance with the above study,under the guidance of the Text Typology Theory the translator can adopt different translation strategies.Based on the specific definitions of Text Typology Theory,the focus of poetry should be on the source language,and the core of the text should be the authors of the source language.The focus of the authors’ comments should be on the target language.Under this circumstance,the translator should adopt equivalent translation so as to convey the original authors’ meaning neutrally and objectively. |
