Explicitation Strategy And Its Representation In Notes ——A Practice Report On The Interpretation Of The Speech On The Annual Meeting Of South China Morning Post By Ma Yun

With more and more Chinese speakers appearing in the international forums,the application of Chinese-English interpretation becomes more widespread.However,there is a big difference in sentence structures between the languages of English and Chinese.Chinese is more characterized by parataxis,therefore the logic relations in Chinese sentences are mostly hidden between the lines.On the other side,English is characterized by hypotaxis so that the logical relations in English are more explicit.In the interpretation of Chinese to English,the explicitation strategy should get properly used to make the hidden logical relations in the Chinese sentences more explicit to help the English specking audience to understand the speech better.This practice report is based on the author’s study on the mock consecutive interpreting of Ma Yun’s 2016 South China Morning Post Annual Conference.It mainly analyzes the explicitation strategy in Chinese to English interpretation and its representation in the notes.The author has classified the logical explicitation into logical grammar explicitation and logical semantic explicitation.Grammar explicitiation refers to the explicitation of the grammatical structure on the surface of the sentences,and it can be subdivided into two sub-categories.One is the indispensable grammatical explicitation,which is also known as mandatory explicitation,and the other is non-mandatory grammar explicitation.In terms of the indispensable logic grammar explicitation,it is proposed the strategy of adding logical conjunctions should be used such as coordinating conjunctions,causal conjunctions,adversative conjunctions,hypothetical conjunctions and conditional conjunctions;for nonmandatory explicitation,it is proposed that concomitant adverbial,attributive clause,sentence reorganization,etc.should be used.For the strategy of the semantic explicitation,it is proposed that the whole context should be integrated by the interpreter,try to find the semantic relationship that is implied in the source language.In the process of using the explicitation strategy,the explicit logical relations can be represented by symbols in the notes,which can highlight the logical relations,and remind the interpreter while outputting the translated language,so that the interpreter can transform the implicit logic into explicit logic,thus improve the quality of the translated language.
