| Indonesia is a country with the largest population of overseas Chinese.In its long-term development,the Chinese have become an integral part of Indonesia.Many elements with Chinese cultural characteristics took root and sprouted in Indonesia after the democratic reform,which promoted the inheritance and development of Chinese culture among Indonesian Chinese.This paper takes Singkawang,the city with maximum Chinese density,as an example to introduce case analysis and field investigation of Chinese language and culture schools in Singkawang.The key point is to study the inheritance and development of Chinese culture by Singkawang Chinese.According to the case analysis of the Chinese language and culture schools in Singkawang,we have concluded that the teaching content has the characteristics of being close to the local life in Indonesia and making hard things simple with strong applicability.And the schools adopt diversified teaching methods of combining classroom teaching with recreation to realize Chinese interpretation on Indonesian local things and behaviors and promote the inheritance and development of Chinese culture through the construction of Chinese cognitive models for students as well as teacher’s words and deeds.At the same time,Chinese language and culture schools in Singkawang have set up various cultural activities,which plays a positive role in the inheritance of Chinese culture by promoting cultural relevance and extension and tracing the roots of Chinese culture.The results of the field investigation indicate that in terms of religious belief,ethnic identity,language usage and cultural heritage,the integration between the Singkawang Chinese and the local society is deepening,while most of them still adhere to the identity of the Chinese.In addition,the Singkawang Chinese pay more attention to the cultural content and the trendiness and visuality of activities themselves than the cultural connotations.Most new generation Chinese,especially hybrids Chinese like recreational activities and the recognition of traditional culture mainly comes from the influence of families and schools.This reflects that the cultural awareness of the third and fourth generations of Chinese is gradually decline,they are less influenced by traditional Chinese culture than the first and second generation Chinese.Overall,effective integration of Chinese culture and Indonesian local society will be the key to the inheritance and development of Chinese culture in Singkawang.The adherence to ethnic identity by Singkawang Chinese provides a guarantee for the inheritance of Chinese culture.But at the same time,Singkawang Chinese should also seize the opportunity of China’s influence expansion,make full use of the influence of Chinese community and the population advantage to strive for the support of local policies thus strengthen the inheritance of Chinese culture and development. |
