Indonesia has the most Chinese people in the world, and with the continued friendly relationship between Indonesia and China,China and Indonesia have strengthened economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation in many different aspects in recent years.Since 2000,Indonesian Chinese education has entered a period of rapid development.More and more young people in Indonesia have begun to learn Chinese. How to better understand teaching Chinese culture has gradually attracted the attention of Indonesian Chinese teaching circles. No language teaching is inseparable from teaching about a country’s culture, especially in the case of teaching the Chinese language, where the long-standing history and culture of China is engrained into the language. To master a language, one must also understand the related cultural background knowledge. Therefore,in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, language teaching should be the main focus, and teaching language-related cultural topics should be closely related. This paper takes Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival as examples of traditional Chinese festivals, and compares the festival customs and cultural connotations in Chinese and Indonesian Chinese communities through field surveys and telephone interviews.Based on the results from this research,it proposes a practical and feasible language and culture teaching program for Indonesian festivals combining key language and cultural experiences together. This paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter introduces the research background, research purpose and significance, research review, research design, and introduces the current status of Chinese culture teaching research for Indonesian learners. It provides a background for the development of the full text and lays a theoretical foundation. The second chapter uses Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival as examples to compare the traditional festival culture of Chinese and Indonesian Chinesecommunities. The festivals are analysed and compared against each other, followed by a comparative analysis of the cultural connotations of both the Chinese and Indonesian Chinese Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festivals. The third chapter focuses on the language teaching of traditional Chinese festival culture in Indonesian society.First,it introduces the words and phares elements in traditional festival culture teaching, including common words and blessings used in traditional festivals of the Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival. Then it introduces common Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival cultural experience projects in teaching, including activities such as couplets, moon watching, etc. Finally,a synthesis of the above-mentioned words and phares elements and cultural experience is presented, and a case for designing a traditional festival language and culture teaching course is proposed. The fourth chapter concludes by explaining the importance of cultural teaching to Chinese learners, summarizing the main arguments of the paper and suggesting strategies for the future of teaching traditional Chinese culture in Indonesia.
