| This paper is an interpreting practice report based on the interpreter’s completion of interpretation tasks of gathering station B in Chevron-CNPC Chuandongbei oil and natural gas project.CDB oil and natural gas project is one of the largest offshore natural gas projects co-developed by Chevron,an international oil giant and CNPC,a state-owned oil company of China.Gathering station B of CDB assumes an essential role in the entire project since gas generated from well pads travels to gathering station B where it is dehydrated and filtered, and then it is sent to gas processing plant for further purification. From July 15th,2018 to December 15th,2018,the interpreter had her half-year internship in the gathering station B.During the internship, the explicitation theory and its techniques were applied to her interpreting practices, guiding the interpreter to adopt relevant strategies to achieve the best result of interpreting.According to Vinay and Darbelnet(1958/1995),explicitation refers to the process in which what is implied in the source language is explicated in the target language;according to the context or situation, such implied semantic information is apparent;the term context not only refers to the wording that comes before and after whatever was under attention, but also situation and culture;the situation is defined as the scene in reality. In this report, explicitation stands for translation shifts made by an interpreter when s/he provides additional information which can be inferred from the context(the co-text,the situation, and the culture).Guided by the explicitation theory, this report has analyzed three explicitation strategies applied in the interpreting tasks:interpersonal explicitation, experiential explicitation, and textual explicitation. The analysis concludes that:1)The interpreter should explicitate the speaker’s emotion, attitude, and mood implied in the source text according to the specific context so as to achieve better interpreting effect.2)The interpreter needs to properly add or substitute characteristic details of objects described by the speaker, including participants information, processes, circumstances and modifiers and make corresponding processing before delivering them to the information receiver.3)Based on the explicitation theory, the interpreter can make the speaker’s message clearer through strengthening the logic and coherence of the speaker so that listeners can win best contextual effect at relatively less cost of cognitive efforts. This paper is mainly composed of four chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the Chevron-CNPC CDB oil and natural gas project and interpreting task;the second chapter deals with the pre-interpreting preparation;in the third chapter, three kinds of explicitation techniques used in interpreting practices are analyzed;the fourth chapter is an assessment of the task based on feedback from all parties including clients and self-evaluation of the interpreter. This practice report shows that the explicitation theory and its techniques are of guiding significance to interpreting practice, and it can serve as a reference for interpreting in the field of natural gas. |
