When COVID-19 rages around the world,it poses a serious threat to people’s life and health and raises concerns about pandemics.Pandemic influenza is one of the most common and widespread pandemics. Therefore,it is necessary for China to deepen its understanding of the characteristics and impacts of pandemic influenza and to be well prepared. The material of this report is excerpted from the epidemiology textbook Introduction to Pandemic Influenza, which explores the social and economic impacts of the disease. It is mainly about medicine, sociology and economics. The text is formal, logical and professional, with many cohesive devices and strong coherence. The difficulty is how to accurately translate the cohesive devices so that the translation reflects the logic of the discourse and maintains coherence. Therefore, from the perspective of the Cohesion and Coherence Theory, the author focuses on analyzing the translation of grammatical and lexical cohesion and coherence and explores the strategies of E-C translation of long, complex sentences and paragraphs. The author finds that in the translation of medical texts,by carefully analyzing the cohesive devices adopted in the source language and adopting translation strategies such as literal translation, omission and addition, translators can improve the readability of the target text, achieve semantic coherence and obtain a version of better translation. The author hopes that the discussion and analysis in this report can provide some inspiration for other translators who translate medical texts and at the same time, strengthen China’s ability to cope with pandemics to a certain extent.
