A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Literature About Higher Education In Latin America And The Caribbean

With the development of the policy of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road,China and Latin American countries are getting closer and closer.In the process of interacting with each other,more and more universities have established Latin American centers to help study Latin American conditions.At a Crossroads: Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean is a comprehensive collection of essays that examine the state of higher education in Latin America from the perspectives of demand,supply,economics,and politics.Commissioned by the Latin American Center of Southwest University of Science and Technology,the author of the report participated in this practice project of English-Chinese translation.Under the guidance of skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of skopos theory,the author of the report completes this translation practice.Based on the above three rules,she discusses the translation methods of the source text from three dimensions: vocabulary,syntax and text.To be specific,the methods of transliteration,literal translation,the combination of literal translation and transliteration and the selection of words are adopted to solve the translation of professional terms.The form of “…的”and word conversion are adopted to solve the problem of adjective translation.Ellipsis,free translation and amplification are adopted to solve the translation of non-predicate verbs.At the syntactic level,the passive sentences can be translated into active sentences or passive sentences.Attributive sentences can be translated by the adoption of prepositions,the adoption of postpositive and can be translated into adverbial clause.The translation of long and difficult sentences is solved by means of linear translation,division and reconstruction.At the textual level,reference,substitution and lexical methods are adopted to solve the problem of cohesion.The problem of coherence is solved by means of logical adjustment.After the completion of the translation,the client assesses the translation,which is smooth and fluent,and meets the requirements.In this translation project,the skopos theory plays a positive guiding role in translation practice.The skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule of skopos theory can help the translator more accurately convey the content of academic texts and improve the translation quality of academic texts.
