After King Wu of Zhou Dynasty destroyed Shang Dynasty,enveloped Ji Shi to the State of Yan,Yan Kingdom existed for more than 800 years until it was destroyed by Qin kingdom.It was the earliest and longest existed Kingdom in the pre-Qin period.Yan Kingdom is also one of the Seven Strongest Kingdoms of the Warring States Period.In its heyday,it opened up a lot of territory.The forces reached the Liao River Basin.Since the investigation of the Yanxia capital site in the late 1920 s,the number of archaeological discoveries in the Yan Kingdom has continued to increase,and a large number of systematic and scientific archaeological data have been obtained,making it possible to research the bronzes of the Yan Kingdom in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty from the angle of ornament.This thesis is divided into six parts.The introduction,including the purpose and significance of the research,introduced emphatically Yan Kingdom’s bronze ware,bronze ornamentation,and Yan culture research situation.The research materials are sorted out,and a total of 103 bronzes from the Yan Kingdom during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty are collected,so as to determine the research scope and explain the research ideas and methods.The first chapter made a typology study on the ornamentation of Yan Kingdom in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.This thesis divided the ornamentation three major categories: animal ornamentation pattern,geometric patterns,and portrait patterns,focusing on Pan Chi pattern,beast-face pattern,Yun and Lei pattern,realistic animal pattern,and rope pattern,which have a strong sense of the times change and with the obvious characteristics.The second chapter,firstly estimates the age of the bronze tomb of the Yan Kingdom of Eastern Zhou Dynasty,and prepares the conditions for the next stage of decoration.Secondly,the ornamentation is divided into three phases and six stages to establish the popular era of ornamentation and summarize the characteristics.The third chapter,from the perspective of the combination of patterns,analyze the location distribution of the patterns of the four types of utensils: Ding,Dou,Dun,and hu,to explore their decorative style and era characteristics.The fourth chapter,from the perspective of cultural interaction reflected in the ornamentation,explore the relationship between the ornamentation on the bronzes of the Yan Kingdom in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and the culture of Zhongshan,Qi,Sanjin,and the culture of the Yuhuangmiao,and analyze the diversity and influence of the origin of the ornamentation of the bronzes.At last it summed up the research on the ornamentation of Yan Kingdom’s bronzes in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.While selectively absorbing the surrounding cultural factors,Yan Kingdom also formed its own original and regional ornamentation,adding a colorful chapter to the history of Chinese bronze culture.The research on the bronze ware decoration patterns of the Yan Kingdom in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty is an important aspect in the study of ancient Chinese bronzes.Through this research,it is helpful to promote the research work on the staging and dating of bronzes in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty,and contribute to the study of social thoughts,cultural exchanges and handicraft production at that time.It can also provide reference for the research in related fields of Yan culture.
