Being relatively accessible,popular science text aims at popularizing scientific knowledge to general audiences.They are literary,but still undoubtedly scientific.The related children’s animation production project with dinosaurs as its theme is the case within the author’s internship.The translation text is an English popular science book — The Dinosaur Quarry,which serves as a reference for the project.This book introduces the history and development of the dinosaur quarry in Utah,USA,and provides knowledge of dinosaurs,other ancient creatures and changes in geographical environment there.Skopos theory attaches importance to the target audience of translation and emphasizes that the translation strategies are determined by the purpose and function of translation.The thesis and the translation practice undergo from the perspective of Skopos theory.Under the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos theory,this thesis analyzes the realization of scientificity,literariness and popularity in the translated text,in order to explore translation methods and techniques used in the translation of The Dinosaur Quarry.In terms of achieving scientificity,the author analyzes three aspects,namely,the translation of terminology and proper nouns,polysemous words,and misinformation.In achieving popularity,the author analyzes how to make the translation popular and readable in dealing with words,phrases and sentences.In terms of achieving literariness,the author makes case studies mainly from two aspects:rhetorical techniques and four-letter words.In general,when translating popular science texts,it is necessary to fully consider the purpose of translation,emphasize the restoration of the original message and style,and realize the fluency and readability of the translated text.The author hopes that the translation report helps personal translation practice in the future and also provides reference for translators of related texts.
