The E-C Translation Report On Early Mongol Rule In Thirteenth-Century Iran (Ssection 3 Of Chapter 5)

This is an English-Chinese translation practice report on Early Mongol Rule of Iran in the Thirteenth Century.This book was written by George Lane,consisting of nine chapters and focusing on the cultural revival of Iran under Mongol rule in the13 th century.The text selected by the translator is the third section of Chapter Five,which mainly reflects the Mongol domination of Iran in the 13 th century by describing the ups and downs of Shams al-Dīn Mu?ammad Kart’s political career in the Mongolian court.The text type selected by the translator belongs to the historic topic,which involves a large amount of historical and cultural content.In the process of translating,the translator needs to read a large number of parallel texts to deepen the understanding of the source text.The translation difficulties encountered by the translator in the process of translating mainly focus on two aspects.One is the lexical aspect,and the other is the syntactic aspect.The difficulties at the lexical level include translating proper nouns,culture-loaded words and polysemous words.To solve the lexical difficulties,the translator mainly uses the translation techniques of transliteration,annotation and extension.The syntactic difficulties include translating long sentences and adverbial clauses.The translator adopts “six-step method”,which refers to condensing the main structure,analyzing the semantic,subordinating,straightening out the logical relationship among the main clause and the subordinate clauses,adjusting allocation and polishing words,to translate the long sentences.The difficulties encountered in translating long sentences are solved by adopting translation techniques such as cutting,splitting-off,inserting and recasting,and the difficulties in translating adverbial clauses are solved by adopting translation techniques such as conversion,inversion and linear translation.Through this translation practice,the translator has had a deeper understanding of the translation theory.In the process of reading a large number of parallel texts,the translator had a general understanding of the history of Il-Khanid.At the same time,the translator also learned that the translation of Mongolian culture is of great significance for Chinese scholars to study Mongolian history.While bearing great responsibility,the translator has also realized her own deficiencies in professional knowledge and cultural knowledge.In the future study,the translator will pay more attention to improving theoretical knowledge and professional skills,and to enhancing cultural deposits by reading books extensively,so as to be better qualified for the translation work.
