| The report is based on the translation of the novel A Polar Affair,which depicts the experiences of the writer himself,his investigation for the survey result of the expedition’s survivor and his exploration of the penguins’ habit.The work shows us human curiosity to learn about the Antarctica continent and explorers’ unremitting pursuit of truth.The translator selects the three chapters of the novel for this translation practice.This report describes the whole process of translation,and analyzes the specific problems combined with specific cases.In order to adequately reproduce the original information and the writer’s writing style in the target text,the translator has adopted some particular methods to deal with those problems.In terms of the translation of proper nouns related to landscapes,the translator classifies the proper nouns into two types,cultural and natural landscapes.The methods of transliteration and literal translation are adopted.At the syntactic level,the translator discusses the translation of parenthesis,which are divided into three categories,with the methods of addition and reorganizing sentences;at the textual level,the translator discusses the three rhetorical devices widely used in the works,namely personification,metaphor and simile.Then the methods of free translation and literal translation are analyzed.Through this translation practice,the translator has understood the nature and significance of translation more profoundly.The translator also has enhanced his insights into the translation problems of the literary texts related to polar exploration.The translator hopes that this practice report can be a good reference to his own or others’ future translation practice and the study of translation. |
