| In recent years, thanks to the continuous development and increasing popularization of Internet technology,a growing number of enthusiasts from different countries can get access to the high-quality educational resources in the world through online open courses. And this emerging model has gradually played a vital role in scientific and cultural exchanges home and abroad. With the implementation of“Going Out” strategy,a great number of outstanding online open courses from prestigious universities in China have been launched on the international MOOC platform and won high popularity among the foreign public.Due to the existence of language barriers, these online open courses can only be accepted by most foreign audiences with the help of subtitle translation, and accurate translation can make them understand the essence of the courses more quickly.Different from subtitle translation of films or documentaries, the subtitle translation of open courses is more distinct and unique, which means it has higher demands. However, there are few studies on translation in this field, and translation methods and techniques need to be improved. This practice report is based on the author’s participation in the subtitle translation project of the online open course “Past and Present” of Urban Development in China. The author attempts to take Eco-translatology as theoretical guidance after a detailed analysis of the source text. The report draws the following conclusions. The constraints in the translational eco-environment of this online open course mainly arise from the lack of equivalence between two languages and the limitations of time and space on subtitle translation. The translator actively adapts himself to the whole translational eco-environment in translation activities and makes adaptive selection from three dimensions on the basis of balancing the constraints on subtitle translation in online open courses. On the linguistic dimension, strategies such as Addition,Omission and Conversion are employed to solve the transformation problems concerning lexical and syntactical structure. On the cultural dimension, strategies of Annotation and Transliteration can be used to translate terminologies with unique Chinese culture accurately, especially the culture-loaded words. On the communicative dimension,it is appropriate for the translators to use the strategies of Rearranging Sentence Order and Paraphrasing,so that the communicative intention of the source language can be reflected in the target language. This report aims at providing some useful references for those who will translate subtitles of online open courses in the future so as to contribute to introducing excellent Chinese online open courses abroad. |
