With the globalization of economy,English has become an important tool for communication between countries and an important medium for students to obtain external information.The latest edition of English Curriculum Standard for High Schools points out that English reading teaching is a significant part of students’ English learning,and it also puts forward new requirements for English reading teaching.Consulting previous literature,the author finds that the research on the whole language theory in China is relatively few and some problems of English reading teaching,which makes the author take an interest in the application of the whole language theory to English reading teaching in senior high school.The whole language theory is a teaching idea that regards language as a whole,explores the essence of language and language learning,and advocates the integration of language skills and language resources to promote language learning.It supports the teaching principles of learner-centered,communication and cooperation,diversity of teacher role,integration,and authenticity to help students learn language.The purpose of this study is to explore the English reading teaching model under the guidance of the whole language theory by integrating the four language skills of listening,speaking,reading,and writing.The research subjects are selected from the two classes’ students of grade 2 in senior high school which the author interns.This study takes the experimental method,questionnaire survey method,and test method to look for the answers to the two research questions.(1)How to apply the integrative idea of the whole language theory to English reading teaching in senior high school?(2)What is the influence of the English reading teaching model under the guidance of the whole language theory on students’ English reading emotion,language skills,and English reading learning strategies?Based on previous research and the author’s consideration,this author discusses the basic teaching idea of the whole language theory and puts forward an English reading teaching mode that can help students read English by integrating the four language skills of listening,speaking,reading,and writing.Through the study,the author finds that the English reading teaching model which integrates listening,speaking,reading,and writing can enhance students’ reading emotion.For example,it can arouse students’ reading interest,correct their reading attitude and enhance their reading motivation.In addition,it can increase students’ learning strategies,such as cognitive strategies,metacognitive strategies,and resource management strategies.The author also finds that the English reading teaching model under the whole language theory can develop students’ language skills slowly.For example,it can improve understanding and expressive skills slowly.The English reading teaching model under the guidance of the whole language theory has some advantages.Firstly,the English reading teaching model is beneficial to enhance interaction between teachers and students in class and it is beneficial to enhance the enthusiasm and initiative of students to participate in class.Then,the English reading teaching model can cultivate students’ sense of cooperation,and it can enhance the generative feature and flexibility of teaching.There are also some disadvantages of the teaching model.First of all,it fits for the teachers and students at a high English level.Secondly,teachers and students need to do a lot of preparations before class.It takes teachers and students much time in class to finish the English reading.It’s not easy for teachers to manage the classroom.In a word,the English reading teaching model under the guidance of the whole language theory is beneficial to students’ English reading.
