The source text of this translation report is selected from the fifth chapter of the biographical novel CHEN Hongmou--A Loyal Minister of the Qing Dynasty(hereinafter referred to as CHEN Hongmou)written by the national first-class writer--HUANG Jishu.CHEN Hongmou is one of A Series on Big Names in Guangxi,which mainly narrates the story of CHEN Hongmou’s official life,his character of rectitude,integrity and humanity.The chapter selected mainly introduces the experience of CHEN Hongmou opening a porridge mill,building a pontoon bridge,providing relief to Jiangxi victims from the mire,and rectifying official management.In this paper,the author adopted Jef Verschueren’s contextual adaptation theory as the theoretical guidance.From the perspective of contextual adaptation theory,this paper focuses on how the translator adapts to the linguistic context,communicative context,physical context and psychological context in the translation process,and thus summarizes the corresponding translation strategies and methods to biographical novels.This paper in all consists of five chapters.In Chapter one,the author mainly introduces the main contents and research background at home and abroad of this translation practice.Chapter two briefly describes the translation process,including the preparation phase before translation,translation process and proofreading phase after translation.Chapter three is a representation of the theoretical framework used by the author,that is,the main idea and classification of contextual adaptation theory.In Chapter four,according to some typical cases,the author analyzes how to flexibly use translation methods such as in-text annotation,footnotes,amplification,etc.and translation strategies such as domestication and foreignization to adapt to the context in dynamic translation process through the translation of official titles,four-character phrases,address forms,modal particles,proverbs,cultureloaded words,time and space,so as to achieve the effect of pragmatic equivalent and spread excellent Chinese culture.In Chapter five,the author makes a conclusion of this translation practice,explains gains and shortcomings,and summarizes that in the C-E translation of biographical novels,more attention should be paid to the combination of literariness and historicity.
