The author translates the text of English for Science and Technology(EST)in the industry of Internet of Things(IoT)into Chinese,a text from the IoT Journal of IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers).The text mainly introduces the present situation and problems of IoT in China,covering policies,research and development plans,applications,standardization and other aspects.Based on its analysis,the text proposes an open and general three-tier IoT architecture.The text also discusses the development opportunity and prospect of IoT.The author uses Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory to guide this translation practice and then completes the report,in which the author analyzes the difficulties and translation strategies of the original text from four aspects of lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic equivalence,so as to achieve functional equivalence.In terms of vocabulary,this report discusses the abbreviations,technical terms and lexical conversion of the original text.In terms of syntax,it discusses the translation methods of passive sentences and long sentences,especially the long difficult sentences.The report also explores textual and stylistic equivalence.This report is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the background of the IoT industry and the status quo of technical text translation regarding IoT: the translation of IoT text can barely keep up with the unprecedented growth of IoT,so IoT text translation should be improved at least in its timeliness and quantity.Then it tells the aim and significance of the study: to effectively supplement the translation practice of IoT text translation,and to try to find out translating methods and strategies in this field.The second part introduces the Functional Equivalence Theory and main features of common scientific text: specialization of vocabularies,complexity of sentences and particularity of style.Based on that,the author thinks that it is feasible to use Functional Equivalency Theory to guide scientific text translation practice.Difficulties of translating the selected original IoT text are shown in the beginning of the third part.These difficulties include correct understanding of words and long difficult sentences and preservation of the style of the original text,deep understanding of the discourse,as well as proper expression of translation and sufficient consideration of the reader.Then,the author expounds translation examples from the original text based on Functional Equivalence Theory.The fourth part summarizes the author's translation practice experience as well as deficiencies of this report.
