A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Construction Contracts For The Installation Of Oil Fume Purifiers

With the in-depth development of economic globalization,more and more business contracts are signed between Chinese enterprises and foreign ones,which increases the demand of the translation of contracts.Construction contract is one kind of contracts among them.As a written agreement signed by the employer and the contractor for the completion of agreed construction and installation projects,construction contract plays an indispensable role in the engineering project as it specifies the rights and obligations of both parties.Therefore,the translation of construction contracts is meaningful.This project report is based on the C-E translation of the excerpt of two construction contracts for the installation of oil fume purifiers.Considering that the source text is a combination of informative text and expressive text,the translator should not only convey the original text’s main ideas,but also reproduce the original text’s writing style and the original author’s writing intention.The major difficulties encountered by the author can be classified into three categories,namely technical terms and formal expressions,non-subject sentences and long and difficult sentences as well as cohesion of the discourse.Under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology and communicative translation and semantic translation theories,this report analyzes the causes of the above-mentioned difficulties and proposes corresponding solutions to them.At lexical level,methods like using online dictionaries and term bases and referring to official translation are adopted to ensure that the translation of technical terms and professional expressions is accurate and consistent.At syntactic level,the author adopts methods of adding subjects,converting the voices,splitting and reordering to accurately convey the original author’s thoughts.At discourse level,methods like adding conjunctions and ellipsis are used to improve the textual cohesion.It is hoped that this report can provide some references for the translation of similar construction contracts.
