A Report On The Translation Of “Poetry And The Public Sphere” （Excerpts）

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation practice of Chapter Five,“Poetry and Public Sphere” of Carol Ann Duffy: Poet for Our Time,written by Jane Dowson.The source text comes from the references of the National Social Science Fund Project “Stylistic Study of Duffy’s Poetry” conducted by her supervisor.At present,there is no Chinese translation version of the original text.The source text introduces the influence of the “public sphere” on Duffy’s poetry creation.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator analyzes the application of this theory in the translation practice.In typical cases,the translator represents the lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylist equivalence between the target text and the source text.The translation report includes five parts.The first part introduces the translation task,including the basic information of the source text,the background of the task and entruster’s requirements.The second part describes the specific translation process,including the preparation before translation,translating,proofreading and revision.The third part is the theoretical framework,which expounds on the Functional Equivalence Theory including the main contents and its application in this translation practice.The fourth part,the main body of this report,is case analysis.The translator selects typical cases from the source text and analyzes the application of translation strategies such as the conversion of part of speech,annotation,free translation at lexical level;the conversion of voice,division at syntactic level;reference and addition for coherence at textual level;representation of idioms with four-character Chinese expression and reproduction of literariness of poetic lines at stylistic level.The fifth part is conclusion,which summarizes the harvest and experience in this report,hoping to provide reference for the translation of academic texts.
