| As a vital tool for worldwide communication today,English plays an essential role in daily communication.Vocabulary is the basis of English learning, and it has always been a challenge for students in primary school. The National English Curriculum Standard(2017)requires students to have a vocabulary of 600-700 words when they graduate from primary school. However, some English teachers often use conventional vocabulary teaching methods and lack efficient teaching methods, resulting in students’ mechanical memorization of words, inability to spell, difficulty in spelling, and lack of interest in learning English. In response to this phenomenon, the researcher tries to use Phonics to teach English vocabulary.Phonics is based on the internal rules that govern the sound and shape of words, and it establishes the link between letters or letter combinations and word formations, allowing students to read words when they see them and write them down when they hear the sounds.Furthermore, students’ interest in learning English will be increased. The researcher uses Listen and Repeat part in the textbook of the Foreign Research Edition as the basic teaching material, applies Phonics to daily vocabulary teaching to help students memorize words easily and provides reference for English vocabulary teaching in primary schools in Wafangdian area.In this research, two classes of the fifth grade of Taiyang Primary School in Wafangdian,Liaoning Province were selected as the research subjects.Class 1 was chosen at random as the experimental class, while Class 2 was chosen at random as the control class, with 40 students in each class. When it comes to teaching vocabulary, the experimental class adopts the Phonics method, whereas the control class adopts the traditional vocabulary method. This research explores the impact of Phonics on students’ vocabulary learning through tests, questionnaires, interviews and other methods, and mainly answers the following questions:1.What’s the effect of Phonics on students’ ability to read English words?2.What’s the effect of Phonics on students’ ability to spell English words?3.What’s the effect of Phonics on students’ interest in English vocabulary leaning? The analysis of pre-test and post-test results revealed that students in the experimental class performed better in word reading and word spelling test.According to the data from the questionnaires and interviews,it is shown that the students in the experimental class had greatly enhanced their interest in learning after learning Phonics. As a result,it is determined that Phonics can improve students’word reading ability and word spelling ability,as well as their interest in learning English vocabulary. Therefore,Phonics is effective for English vocabulary teaching. |
