Zheng Zhenduo is a famous "encyclopedic" scholar and editor in the 20 th century with a forward-looking academic vision beyond The Times. He has a conscious and active awareness of literary images, based on which he has carried out a lot of literary image research and practice, becoming one of the pioneers in the field of illustration in the history of Chinese literature and woodcut field, and an important figure that cannot be ignored in the study of Chinese literary images. The academic circles generally recognize zheng Zhenduo’s starting position in the illustration of literary history and take it as the starting point of narration, but at present, there is a lack of more specific and detailed research on this,so that this "narrative starting point" only stays at the level of background and habitual language. Therefore, this paper intends to start with Zheng Zhenduo’s literary image consciousness, discuss the source of his literary image consciousness, and sort out the track of his literary image research and practice.Through "close reading" the illustrations in his four literary history, this paper sums up and analyzes his consideration and preference for choosing pictures and writing, and explores the hidden folk consciousness and its roots behind his literary image consciousness and activities. Therefore, this paper can make a more comprehensive and solid evaluation and grasp of Zheng Zhenduo’s literary image research and practice. This paper hopes to restore zheng Zhenduo’s literary image academic context more clearly, and seek enlightenment for the development of literature image related research in China.
