Zheng Zhenduo is a famous cultural master in the modern Chinese history, who made great contributions to literature, culture relics studies, translation studies and historiography. A great deal of studies on him has been developed in these years. However, there are few studies on his thought development that consider him as an intellectual in history. Plenty of historical materials are employed to make a systematic study on Zheng Zhenduo's thoughts. Zheng Zhenduo grew up in the May Fourth period. He originated a magazine named New Society, in which he put forward social reform thought of"from bottom to top". He emphasized that people and society would be transformed by the way of enlightening them. After the May Fourth Movement, he took part in the discussion on reorganizing of culture heritage and he brought forward a unique method for reorganizing of culture heritage. Zheng tried to discover man's value from historical documents in order to break the monopoly of monarch literature and promote people literature. Propelled by the conception of identifying with man, he advanced the conception of"popular literature". In 1940s, Zheng stood in the front of times, and then he originated a weekly democracy. Appeal for democracy, criticize despotism, oppose civil warAlso because of his identifying with man, he chose the later when faced Kuomintang and Communist Party of China. As an intellectual, he had been in hesitation in the intersection of academics and politics. Yet due to great changes of times, he had to walk into the front of political conflicts. His thoughts above mentioned will be researched, and his psychological process will be discussed as well.
